Determining the single greatest boxer of all time can be a difficult task for several reasons, not the least of which being the fact that boxers compete in different weight classes and box using dramatically different styles. That said, there are a few popular choices among boxing aficionados and experts.

Muhammad Ali, formerly known as Cassius Clay, is often cited not only as the sport’s greatest athlete, but one of its most influential. Over the course of his historic career, Ali amassed a record of 56-5, losing only one fight by knockout while delivering 37 knockout blows of his own. He became the first ever three-time World Heavyweight Champion and successfully defended his title on 19 occasions.

When it comes to lightweight boxers, it is difficult to find an athlete with a more impressive record than Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez recorded an impressive 107 victories over the course of his career, including 88 by knockout, while losing only 2 bouts and recording 6 draws. Boxing from 1980 through 2005, his expansive career included multiple world championships in three separate divisions.

Other boxers who deserve consideration include Sugar Ray Robinson, winner of 175 bouts, and Mike Tyson, who took 44 of his 50 career wins by knockout.
